The “thin blue line” is a phrase that refers figuratively to the position of police in society as the force which holds back chaos. The term began as an allusion to the famous “Thin Red Line”, when a British infantry regiment held off a Russian cavalry charge during the Crimean War in 1854. The phrase itself comes up several times throughout history after this. The Thin Blue Line, E. Morris 1988, featured the use of the term on a widespread scale. The term in recent years has been formed into a symbol rather than just a phrase and is now appropriated for most if not all civilian service or medical employees.
