How To Light Your Flagpole With Good, Better, and Best Options

“It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset … However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”

The above quote is from the U.S Flag Code which advises rules for proper display and care for the U.S Flag. According to the code, it is expected that all flags flying at night are to be efficiently illuminated, preferably by a specifically placed light source directed towards the flag. Today, there are several different flagpole lighting options for you to choose from based on cost, performance, and installation methods.

Let's go through some good, better, and best options to help you select the best light for your flagpole!

Above Ground LED Light - Good

If you’re looking for the most cost effective, this would be a good option to look at. The above ground fixtures maximize upward light to provide consistent light patterns that are controlled by narrow spot beam distributions. Please note, this is not a Dark Sky compliant solution. Depending on the surrounding light near your flagpole, we recommend installing anywhere from 1-3 fixtures to effectively light your flag.

Inground LED Light - Better

Similar to the above ground fixtures, the inground lights also maximize the upward light for a consistent light source to the flag, allowing it to shine bright in the night sky. One of the key differences to installing in ground lighting and a common reason to opt for this option is for those high traffic areas like parks and memorials. Having the light placed inground reduces the chance of physical damage to the product, as well as leaving the walkway uninterrupted. Also, these light fixtures are the only factory assembled in ground flagpole light on the market, meaning hook up a power source and bam, your flag is lit!

StarGazer LED Down Light - Best

The best flagpole lighting option is a patented top down light, the StarGazer. Our team was asked to co-developed this product to efficiently light the flag from top down, rather than from the bottom up. Our goal was to create the best, long lived, safest product in the industry. A key aspect and driving feature was to ensure Dark Sky compliance. Dark Dky compliant is a movement established in Arizona that is designed to reduce light pollution so we can better enjoy the stars and constellations at night. Also, with this new downlight technology, not only is your flag beautifully lit, but the surrounding walkways are also illuminated for bypassers.

The StarGazer is designed for both residential and commercial installation. The best part is, whether you’re installing a brand new pole, or just want to update your current light source, the StarGazer is always an option. Check out this video for more information!
