Anguilla, a British overseas territory, has three flags used in the country. The Dolphin flag is regarded as the “real” flag by most Anguillans as it is flown on the island at shops and residents more frequently than the official flag. The official flag was adopted May 30th, 1990, 10 years after Anguilla became a separate crown colony. The official flag was sketched by the former Governor of Anguilla, Brian Canty, and later sent to London for approval by the Queen. The design that Canty put forth incorporates the affiliation with both Britain and Anguilla’s Three Dolphin Flag. The official flag is that of a British Blue Ensign charged with the coat of arms of Anguilla on the fly. The dolphins in the coat of arms symbolize friendship, wisdom, and strength; where the white field behind them stands for peace and the blue represents the sea, as well as hope, youth, and faith.
