The California Republic was a short lived, breakaway state that militaristically controlled the land north of San Francisco in what is now Sonoma County. The rebels took control sometime in June 1846, and maintained control for 25 days before the young republic’s military was subsumed into the California Battalion, commanded by Brevet Captain John C. Frémont. The Bear Flag Revolt and whatever remained of the “California Republic” ceased to exist on July 9th after two American Flags were raised in front of the Sonoma Barracks and the second flag was raised at Sutter’s Fort.
