History of the CONGO 1960-1962 Battle Streamer
From July 1960 to September 1962, the U.S. Air Force played a pivotal role in OPERATION NEW TAPE, supporting United Nations (UN) operations in the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. This marked the largest airlift operation since the 1948-1949 Berlin Airlift. In response to the UN's request, the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) provided air traffic control resources and dispatched C-130s and a combat airlift support unit to transport UN troops from 16 nations, including India and Canada, to the Congo. Airlifting 90 percent of the 20,000 UN troops and evacuating 2,640 refugees, the USAF demonstrated its capability to overcome linguistic, communication, and navigational challenges in supporting a large and sustained overseas operation, showcasing the professionalism and resilience of its airmen in the face of adversity.
