History of the CONGO 1964 Battle Streamer
In November 1964, rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo threatened to kill hostages held for over three months unless the central government withdrew its troops from the Stanleyville area. In response, a joint effort involving the Congolese government, Belgium, and the United States was launched to rescue the hostages. The United States Air Forces in Europe took operational control of the airlift, deploying a Tactical Air Command squadron of C-130E aircraft from Kamina Air Base. On November 24, 1964, Belgian paratroopers were airdropped in Stanleyville, facing resistance and casualties. Despite the challenges, the rescue mission succeeded in saving most hostages, but 29, including two Americans, lost their lives. The evacuation continued with additional airdrops, ultimately saving around 2,100 hostages from 18 nations.
