History of the LEBANON 1983-1987 Battle Streamer
In May 1983, the U.S. Marine Corps rotated its Marine Amphibious Unit, part of a multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Stationed at Beirut International Airport, adjacent to the Moslem-controlled sector of West Beirut, the Marines were supported by a U.S. Navy task force offshore. On October 23, 1983, a terrorist bomb destroyed the Marines' headquarters, resulting in 241 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The Air Force swiftly conducted evacuations using Military Airlift Command aircraft, transporting wounded personnel to U.S. Army and Air Force hospitals in Germany. Amidst ongoing attacks, the Marines withdrew by March 1984. Later, on September 20, terrorists targeted the U.S. Embassy Annex, leading to 24 casualties. Military Airlift Command aircraft facilitated the evacuation of wounded individuals to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Subsequent relocations and support operations were provided by the U.S. Navy and Army in the face of continued tensions in the region.
