History of the LIBYA-ELDORADO CANYON 1986 Battle Streamer
In 1986, the United States executed Operation ELDORADO CANYON, a military action against Libya aimed at discouraging state-sponsored terrorism targeting American citizens and facilities. Taking place on April 12-13, Navy ships off Libya's coast and Air Force units in the United Kingdom coordinated for a nighttime assault. Strategic Air Command tankers launched from RAF Fairford and RAF Mildenhall, refueling fighter aircraft during a 2,800-mile flight over international waters to Libya. Operating at low altitudes to evade radar detection, the aircraft attacked targets near Tripoli, including Azziziyah barracks and the Sidi Bilal terrorist camp. The operation involved Navy carrier-based aircraft bombing Benghazi. Despite the loss of one F-11, the strikes successfully deterred Libyan-sponsored terrorism for a time, demonstrating the U.S. commitment to employing force against state-sponsored threats.
