History of the MAYAGUEZ OPERATION 1975 Battle Streamer
On May 12, 1975, Cambodian forces seized the American-registered cargo ship Mayaguez, prompting the U.S. government to order its recapture and the rescue of its 40-man crew. USAF helicopters approached Koh Tang Island, where the crew was believed to be held, but encountered heavy fire from well-armed Cambodian soldiers. Despite the return of the Mayaguez crew and the seizure of the cargo ship by mid-morning, the Marines on Koh Tang needed reinforcement. The U.S. launched air and naval attacks, and after intense fighting, the Air Force helicopters successfully evacuated the Marines by nightfall. The operation resulted in 15 American casualties, concluding U.S. combat involvement in Southeast Asia. This historical account is presented in a concise manner to avoid copyright concerns.
