History of the PANAMA 1989-1990 Battle Streamer
On December 20, 1989, U.S. military forces launched Operation Just Cause, invading Panama to safeguard American citizens, support democracy, ensure the functioning of the Panama Canal, and apprehend General Manuel Noriega, the country's dictator. The mission aimed to bring Noriega to trial in U.S. courts for involvement in illegal drug activities. Employing a massive airborne operation, Military Airlift Command aircraft dropped around 5,000 troops at various locations in Panama. The operation involved a coordinated effort with Army and Navy special forces, as well as Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard crews. The resistance concluded on Christmas Day, leading to Noriega's surrender on January 3, 1990. The aftermath involved humanitarian operations and the transportation of troops back to the U.S. About 200 1st Special Operations Wing personnel remained in Panama for January to assist with humanitarian efforts.
