History of the PERSIAN GULF 1987-1990 Battle Streamer
In 1980, as the Iran-Iraq War erupted, the United States outlined its Persian Gulf policy, aiming to secure the flow of petroleum, prevent Soviet Union dominance, and support friendly Gulf states. By 1987, responding to Kuwait's request for protection against Iranian attacks on its tankers, the U.S. deployed naval forces in the Persian Gulf, initiating convoy escorts for reflagged Kuwaiti vessels. The first convoy started on July 22, but an Iranian mine disabled a tanker two days later. With no minesweeping capabilities in the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted helicopters and equipment to Diego Garcia Island, facilitating operations by mid-August. Airlifts, refueling operations, and AWACS aircraft from Saudi Arabia supported U.S. efforts. After Iran-Iraq's cease-fire in August 1988, the U.S. Navy withdrew forces, downgraded operations, and successfully upheld its Persian Gulf policy by year-end.
