History of the VIETNAM ADVISORY 1961-1965 Battle Streamer
On November 15, 1961, the 2d Advanced Echelon (2d ADVON) was activated in Saigon, marking the beginning of the United States Air Force presence in Vietnam. The 2d ADVON controlled USAF units and initially focused on training Vietnamese aircrews. In response to increased Communist insurgency, the U.S. gradually increased military aid, deploying forces and establishing the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) on February 8, 1962. Despite growing U.S. aid, the Viet Cong insurgency persisted, leading to political instability in South Vietnam. In 1964, U.S. involvement expanded to Laos, and by late 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin incident escalated the conflict. President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered American dependents evacuated from South Vietnam on February 7, 1965, marking a significant turning point. The same day, the USAF conducted its first raid against North Vietnam.
