History of the VIETNAM AIR 1966 Battle Streamer
In 1966, a 37-day bombing halt by the U.S. aimed at prompting peace negotiations with North Vietnam failed, leading to the resumption of aerial attacks on January 31. The bombing covered practically all of North Vietnam, with restricted zones requiring Washington approval. The air war escalated, marked by B-52 raids and the introduction of WILD WEASEL F-100Fs to counter surface-to-air missiles.
Simultaneously, in South Vietnam, Allied ground forces sought increased air support in operations against the Viet Cong. The Seventh Air Force was activated on April 1, 1966, replacing the 2d Air Division to control diverse air operations in South Vietnam. The USAF conducted extensive airlift, aerial resupply, and close air support for ground operations.
Despite successes, there were setbacks, notably the loss of the South Vietnamese Special Forces Camp at A Shau. The USAF continued bombing the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and provided air support against Communist forces. B-52s played a significant role in interdicting the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos during the first half of 1966.
