History of the VIETNAM SUMMER-FALL 1969 Battle Streamer
In the summer of 1969, South Vietnam experienced a temporary decrease in Communist military action, with Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces withdrawing into Laos after the siege on Ben Het. The defenders credited air power, particularly B-52 bombings, for preventing the enemy from capturing the camp. However, a new offensive began in August, as Communist forces attacked numerous cities, towns, and military installations in South Vietnam. Simultaneously, South Vietnam intensified its pacification program, and the United States initiated the withdrawal of its military forces. The USAF provided close air support in various operations, including in Laos on the Plain of Jars and the panhandle, where COMMANDO HUNT II targeted North Vietnamese supply routes. The narrative involves a complex interplay of military strategies, air support, and shifting dynamics on the ground during a critical period in the Vietnam War.
