History of the CHINA DEFENSIVE 1942-1945 Battle Streamer
During World War II, on July 4, 1942, the China Air Task Force (CATF), a crucial unit of the Tenth Air Force, took on the vital role of defending China's airspace. Led by Brig. Gen. Claire L. Chennault, the CATF operated from strategic bases in China, executing daring air raids on Japanese targets. Despite challenges like a fuel shortage, the CATF's efforts paved the way for the activation of the Fourteenth Air Force in March 1943. Under General Chennault, the Fourteenth Air Force intensified offensive missions, facing Japanese attacks but persevering to focus on enemy shipping and installations. Adapting to Japanese ground offensives in 1944, the force shifted to close air support for Chinese forces, engaging in intercepting enemy aircraft and striking troop columns. By December 1944, the AAF airlifted Chinese divisions to reinforce the fight against the Japanese advance. Despite setbacks, reequipped Chinese troops prepared, supported by the expanding Hump airlift, to reclaim their homeland from Japanese occupation.
