History of the GUADALCANAL 1942-1943 Battle Streamer
In August 1942, the 1st Marine Division launched a bold landing on Guadalcanal, capturing the strategically vital Henderson Field from the Japanese. The airfield played a crucial role in asserting American air dominance despite fierce ground attacks and enemy bombings. The battle persisted throughout the year, marked by a significant warship bombardment on October 13-14 that briefly disabled Henderson Field. Undeterred, U.S. forces utilized alternative supply routes, and P-400 pilots provided essential air support.
Despite challenges, the Marines expanded their perimeter, receiving reinforcements such as the activation of the Thirteenth Air Force in January 1943, led by Maj. Gen. Nathan F. Twining. U.S. Army XIV Corps launched offensives, culminating in the Japanese evacuation from Guadalcanal on February 7, 1943.
