History of the LUZON 1944-1945 Battle Streamer
In December 1944, U.S. Army forces landed on Mindoro Island, facing challenges from Japanese suicide attacks. Within 5 days, they built Hill Field, a crucial airfield. Facing relentless attacks, Fifth Air Force units displayed resilience, supporting the offensive with determination.
V Bomber Command's B-24s targeted Japanese installations on Luzon, paving the way for a strategic assault. The U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet overcame kamikaze attacks en route to Lingayen Gulf, leading to the elimination of Japanese air forces on Luzon by January 18.
The campaign climaxed with the U.S. Eighth Army's bold landings near Subic Bay and Manila Bay. Manila saw intense house-to-house fighting, cleared with the help of AAF aircraft by March 4. Corregidor fell by February 27.
In the Luzon theater, AAF's precision was key against fortified positions. By July 4, 1945, less than 7 months after landing, U.S. forces emerged victorious, marking a significant chapter against Japanese forces.
