History of the ARDENNES-ALSACE 1944-1945 Battle Streamer
In December 1944, the Battle of the Bulge unfolded as German forces launched a surprise offensive in the Ardennes. The U.S. First and Third Armies swiftly responded, with key actions from the 7th Armored Division and American airborne troops. Adverse weather initially hampered aerial combat, but the Allies gained air superiority, conducting successful close air support missions after the weather cleared. The 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne received vital supplies via Allied transports.
On January 1, 1945, the Luftwaffe launched a final offensive, destroying numerous Allied aircraft on the ground. Despite challenges, the 101st Airborne Division held firm, and the U.S. 4th Armored Division opened a corridor to Bastogne on December 29. Counterattacks and the German retreat by January 8 marked the end of the Ardennes salient.
Simultaneously, on January 1, 1945, enemy forces attacked the U.S. Seventh Army along the Rhine River. Although facing initial withdrawals, a stand at Strasbourg, and a failed attempt to block passes over the Vosges Mountains, the German offensive eventually faltered. By January 25, the Wehrmacht was in retreat out of France.
