History of the NAPLES-FOGGIA (AIR) 1943-1944 Battle Streamer
During World War II, the XII Bomber Command and IX Bomber Command played a crucial role in targeting key locations in Italy, including Rome, Naples, and Foggia. The transfer of units from the Ninth Air Force to the Twelfth Air Force in response to the Northwest African Air Forces' request reinforced air support for the invasion of Italy. Despite the Italian government's surrender, German forces persisted, challenging the U.S. Fifth Army's beachhead at Salerno. With strategic moves and air support, the Allies gradually pushed German forces back, leading to the recapture of Corsica. The success in southern Italy enabled the activation of the Fifteenth Air Force, commanded by Maj. Gen. James H. Doolittle, conducting bombing missions over Axis targets in northern Italy, Austria, and Germany.
