History of the NORTHERN FRANCE 1944 Battle Streamer
In July 1944, American forces launched a decisive offensive near St. Lo, Normandy, utilizing a massive air attack and innovative tactics in close air support. Despite initial challenges, the U.S. First Army successfully breached German defenses, marking a pivotal moment in the campaign. The Allies' use of fighter-bombers with radios facilitated direct communication, providing continuous air cover for advancing armored forces. As the Allied armies progressed, airfields were constructed, and by August 6, the Ninth Air Force moved to the continent. Following the breakout, U.S. armor reached Avranches, driving westward and achieving significant territorial gains. The Luftwaffe's attempts to disrupt operations had little impact, leading to the liberation of Paris on September 4 and the capture of Antwerp by British troops. The port, however, remained blocked until late November.
