History of the TUNISIA 1942-1943 Battle Streamer
In November 1942, amidst Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's retreat in Libya and General Eisenhower's advance into Tunisia, AAF troop carriers executed crucial airborne missions, dropping U.S. and British troops. The objective was to seize forward airfields in Algeria, playing a pivotal role in the campaign. Despite encountering German defenders in the Atlas Mountains, the Allies stabilized battle lines near Medjez-el-Bab by mid-December.
The Twelfth Air Force provided close air support, while bombing raids targeted Tunisian airfields. Intensified Luftwaffe attacks and Ninth Air Force bombings on key ports hindered Axis resupply attempts. A tactical setback occurred in the Kasserine Pass, where Rommel's Italian troops established a defensive position, leading to a major Allied defeat.
Reorganization under the Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF) brought unity of command. With renewed ground forces and air support, the Allies launched a successful pincer movement from March 17-31. By April 22, Allied air forces gained virtual air superiority, disrupting Axis supply lines. On May 7, British troops entered Tunis, and American units seized Bizerte, securing valuable air bases. The Allies then launched further assaults on the Mediterranean, Sicily, and Italy. The Battle Streamer commemorates the courage and resilience displayed during this pivotal World War II campaign.
