The flag of Albania, nicknamed flamur e Skënderbeut (the flag of Skanderbeg), has a red field with a double-headed eagle. The red field represents bravery, strength, and valor; while the double-headed eagle represents the sovereign state of Albania. The flag was established as the national flag of Albania after the country’s independence was gained from the Ottoman empire in 1912. The current flag is said to have been the flag of Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania. In 1443, Skanderbeg and a few hundred Albanians defected from the Turkish army. Upon defecting, Skenderbeg led his men to Krujë, where he used a forged letter from Sultan Murad II to the Governor of Krujë to take control of the city. After conquering several castles in the surrounding area, according to biographer Frashëri, he raised a red standard with a black double-headed eagle on Krujë. The Albanian people later used Skenderbeg’s helmet as a state emblem as well.
