When Angola gained its independence on November 11th, 1975 the national flag of Angola was raised. The top half of the flag is red and the bottom half black charged with a yellow emblem that features half of a cog wheel crossed by a machete and crowned by a star. The red in the flag signifies the bloodshed during the struggles for independence, while the black half symbolizes Africa. The emblem looks similar to hammer and sickle used on the Soviet flag with some changes to it; the gear represents industrial workers where the sickle represents peasantry and the star symbolizes socialism. The yellow used for the emblem symbolized the country’s wealth.
