History of the ANTISUBMARINE 1941-1945 Battle Streamer
During World War II, the Army Air Forces Antisubmarine Command played a crucial role in countering German submarine threats. Activated in October 1942, it deployed radar-equipped B-24 squadrons to England, conducting patrols over the Bay of Biscay and north coast of Spain. The command's relentless efforts disrupted enemy operations, particularly in the mid-Atlantic and off the coast of Portugal. The 480th Antisubmarine Group, stationed in French Morocco, significantly contributed to the success by patrolling the Straits of Gibraltar and attacking German submarines. The combined efforts of the RAF, U.S. Navy, and AAF Antisubmarine Command eventually allowed Allied ships to navigate the eastern Atlantic Ocean without serious resistance from enemy submarines. The 479th Antisubmarine Group, formed in late June with B-24 squadrons from Newfoundland, continued the campaign, patrolling the Bay of Biscay and North Atlantic. Despite German adaptations, the unit operated until October 31, 1943, when the AAF Antisubmarine Command inactivated and transferred its resources to the U.S. Navy. The threat diminished, leading to the disbandment of the 479th Antisubmarine Group in England in November 1943 and the return of the 480th Antisubmarine Group to the United States in January 1944.
