History of the ANZIO 1944 Battle Streamer
In January 1944, the VI Corps launched a bold landing at Anzio on the Italian west coast, aiming to break through German defenses and swiftly reach Rome. This joint Anglo-American operation, backed by the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces, surprised the enemy with minimal resistance during the initial landing. Under U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John P. Lucas, the VI Corps secured the beachhead, but faced strong German counterattacks led by Field Marshal Albert Kesselring. The Mediterranean Allied Air Forces played a crucial role, providing air cover and support despite challenging weather conditions. A fierce German counterattack on February 16 tested the Allies, but with MAAF assistance, they held their ground. While the Anzio landing fell short of its primary objective, it proved pivotal in the broader Italian campaign, setting the stage for the breakthrough at the Gustav Line in May.
