History of the Dominican Republic 1965-1966 Battle Streamer
In 1965, a violent uprising in the Dominican Republic, suspected to be influenced by Communist forces, prompted the United States to intervene. On April 28, 1965, U.S. Marines landed near Santo Domingo to protect American citizens and assist in evacuation efforts. The U.S. response escalated with the deployment of Army paratroopers and Air Force fighter jets, among other military units. By May 17, the number of U.S. troops reached nearly 24,000, and by May 29, the U.S. forces, along with soldiers from six Latin American nations, formed the Inter-American Peace Force under the Organization of American States. U.S. military operations continued for over a year, ensuring the stability of the Dominican Republic and preventing the perceived rise of Communist influence. The last U.S. forces withdrew by September 21, 1966, leaving behind a legacy of peacekeeping and military cooperation.
