While very similar to the flag of Qatar, the flag of Bahrain differs in many ways. Bahrain’s flag features a white band on the left and a red band on the right, the bands are separated by five triangles that represent the Five Pillars of Islam. While once ruled by the Portuguese Empire between 1521 to 1602; in 1783 the Bani Utbah clan took control of Bahrain and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family. In the late 1800s, Bahrain would become a protectorate of Britain after treaties; one of which would have been the addition of the white band to the country’s flag. The Bahraini flag would have been plain red at this time in history and Britain needed a way to discern Bahraini ships from pirates. In 1971, Bahrain declared its independence and became an emirate. After shedding the mantle of emir, Bahrain declared that it was an Islamic constitutional monarchy in 2002.
