A red disc on top of a green field is what makes up the Bangladesh flag; adopted January 17th, 1972, the flag was originally based on a similar flag that was flown during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The flag that was flown during the war had the same design, but featured a yellow map of the country inside the red disc. The map was removed from the flag, due to the difficulty of rendering the map correctly on both sides of the flag. The red disc looks as if it is centered on the flag when in actuality it is offset towards the hoist end so that as it’s flying the red disc looks centered. The red disc symbolizes the sun rising over Bengal and the blood of those who died fighting for the independence of Bangladesh, while the green field surrounding the red disc represents the lushness of the Bangladeshi land.
