The ikurrina flag, in Basque or ikurriña in Spanish Basque, is symbol for the Basque peoples and is also the official flag of the Basque Country Autonomous Community of Spain. The term ikurrina is neologism from the Basque region; originating with Luis and Sabino Arana, where they took ikur “mark, sign”. The original Biscayne spelling was ikuŕiñ. In Basque, the term is a generic meaning of “flag”, but specially the one of the Basque Country. The design of the flag is similar to the Union Jack pattern with a white central cross and a green saltire on a red field. The red symbolizes the red ground that the Biscayan people inhabit while the green saltire represents the Oak of Guernica, a symbol of the old laws of Biscay. The white cross stands over them exemplifying God’s symbol of Basque Catholic devotion.
