The national flag of Druk Yul, or the “Dragon Kingdom”, is a beautiful flag divided diagonally from the upper fly corner to the lower hoist. The upper triangle is yellow representing the civil traditions and temporal authority as embodied in the Dragon King of Bhutan, whose royal garb included a yellow kabney traditionally; the orange embodies Buddhist spiritual tradition. The black and white dragon is spread equally over the dividing line holding a norbu, or jewel, in each of its claws. The dragon has been a mainstay symbol for Bhutanese culture for centuries. It has been alluded to in mythological stories as well as being the originating symbol for the Drukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism; the dominant religion of Bhutan. Some posit that the dragon placement symbolizes the civic and monastic traditions of the Kingdom of Druk and how both are equally important. The dragon evokes the strength of the sacred bond between sovereign and people while the white color in the druk symbolizes the purity of inner thoughts and deeds that unite the diverse people of Bhutan. The jewels that are held represent the wealth of Bhutan and the security and protection of its people.
