When selecting a residential flagpole, there are numerous options to consider. You might be surprised by all the different things you need to think about when choosing the best flagpole for your needs
Here’s an overview of the different elements that make up in-ground flagpoles. Check out some of the most important aspects to consider as you choose the perfect flagpole for your needs.
1. Budget
We recommend that you have an idea of your budget before you start shopping for a flagpole. A quality ground set flagpole that provides performance for decades will range in price and can start at $350 and go up from there.
2. Height
In-ground flagpoles for homes are on average between 20 and 30 feet high, but 20 feet is the most common height for residential displays.
When the flagpole in your yard is intended to be a point of interest or showcase your patriotism then you can give yourself an excuse for a 30ft pole. Flagpoles on ranches and large estates also tend to be 30 feet or taller.
3. Material
In-ground flagpoles are typically constructed of aluminum or fiberglass. Aluminum is the most commonly used metal for flagpoles because it is lighter than steel, will not rust like steel, and works well in both commercial and residential settings.
Generally, fiberglass can handle a much higher wind load and is often used near high wind locations and near the ocean.
Finally, steel poles are generally used for “monster” flagpoles, greater than 80’ tall. Steel poles are very strong, but exceptionally heavy, and require a great deal of skill and labor to install.
4. Wind Rating
When selecting a flagpole, it is important to consider the maximum wind speeds based on your location. Wind and weather will help determine the type of flagpole you should invest in.
To choose the right flagpole for you, it’s best to know the wind average wind speed of your specific region, which can be seen on a wind speed map.
5. Raising and Lowering the Halyard
The flagpole mechanism consisting of the cleat and halyard will either be located on the outside of the pole (externally) or inside the pole (internally). External mechanisms are fine in most scenarios and for most homeowners.
