With the Winter Olympics currently underway in Italy and Super Bowl just days away on February 8th, there's no better time to celebrate one of America's most patriotic traditions: massive American flags at major sporting events!
If you've ever watched the Super Bowl or the Olympics, you've likely witnessed the breathtaking sight of enormous American flags being unfurled across entire stadiums. These incredible displays are more than just decoration—they're powerful symbols that unite fans and create unforgettable moments.
So where can you find America's largest flags, and which ones have graced the biggest stages in sports? Keep reading!
The World's Largest American Flag
The world's largest American flag is the legendary Superflag, created by the late Thomas "Ski" Demski of Long Beach, California, measuring 505 feet by 225 feet and weighing 3,000 pounds. This massive flag requires more than 500 volunteers just to unfurl it! Each star is 17 feet high, and the stripes are 20 feet wide—so huge that it can cover a football field one and a half times!
The Superflag has been the star attraction at multiple Super Bowls, creating those spine-tingling National Anthem moments that give millions of viewers goosebumps. It's also made spectacular appearances at the World Series and was even displayed over the Hoover Dam in 1996 to celebrate the Summer Olympics.
This Sunday, February 8, 2026, Super Bowl LX kicks off and you can bet that massive American flags will be part of the pageantry. Whether it's the Superflag or another enormous Old Glory, these giant flags during the National Anthem are one of the most anticipated moments of any Super Bowl broadcast.
The World's Tallest Flagpole
The Acuity flagpole, also known as the "World's Tallest Symbol of Freedom," stands on the Acuity Insurance campus in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This 400-foot marvel—nearly 100 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty—flies the world's largest free-flying American flag.
The flag measures 70 feet by 140 feet, weighs 250 pounds, and covers nearly 9,800 square feet. Unlike the Superflag, this one flies continuously and is visible for miles. Surrounding the flagpole is a veterans' memorial featuring more than 750 inscribed pavers with the names of Sheboygan County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice.
