Celebrating 250 Years: The Evolution of the American Flag

Posted by Hayley Adams on Feb 12th 2026

As we continue our countdown to America's 250th birthday, there's no better symbol to celebrate than the flag itself. Few national emblems in the world have evolved as meaningfully as the Stars and Stripes, each change telling a story of a growing, dynamic nation.

From 13 to 50: A Flag That Grew With a Nation

The first official American flag, established by the Flag Resolution of 1777, featured thirteen stars and thirteen stripes representing the original colonies. But as the nation expanded, so did its flag. In 1794, two stars and two stripes were added to recognize Vermont and Kentucky, the design that famously flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to write what would become our national anthem.

Congress eventually realized that adding a stripe for every new state would make the flag unwieldy, so the Flag Act of 1818 returned the design to thirteen stripes and established the practice of adding only a new star for each incoming state. That tradition carried the flag from 20 stars all the way to the 50-star version we know today, which has remained unchanged since Hawaii joined the Union in 1960, making it the longest-serving design in American flag history.

The Symbolism Behind the Design

Every element of the flag carries meaning that has endured for 250 years. The thirteen stripes honor the founding colonies and serve as a permanent reminder of where it all began. The red symbolizes valor and hardiness, the white represents purity and innocence, and the blue field, often called the "canton", stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

More Than a Flag

What makes the American flag truly remarkable is that it isn't just a national symbol, it's a personal one. It flies from front porches, is carried in parades, and is draped over the caskets of those who gave their lives in service. At Eagle Mountain Flag and Flagpole, we see every day how deeply people connect with this symbol, and it's a privilege to be part of that tradition.

As we approach this once-in-a-generation milestone, there's never been a more meaningful time to fly the flag proudly.
