Anatomy of a Flag
The Hoist
Hoist refers to the height at which the flag is being flown at. The term hoist is also used to refer to the edge part of the flag connected to the flagpole or staff. It is more commonly known as ‘hoist end’.
The Fly & Fly End
The fly of a flag can be referred to as the length of the flag measured from the connecting point on the flagpole to the furthest point of the flag. The Fly End is known as the flapping part of the flag that flies in the wind and can get easily frayed. Check out our tips on preserving your fly and how to choose the best flag for your area!
The Canton
The canton is also known as the top innermost corner of a flag. It is usually found on the upper, left-hand corner of a flag. For the American Flag, the Canton is where the stars are located.
Now let discuss the various parts of the Flagpole.
The Anatomy of a Flagpole
The Flagpole
The main part is, of course, the flagpole. There are several sizes and types of flagpoles out there from indoor poles to mega flagpoles and everything in between.
The Truck
Trucks are the caps affixed at the top of a flagpole and usually have holes in order to attach pulleys and hoist the flag up and down
The Finial
A finial or a staff ornament is a decorative piece attached to the uppermost part of the flagpole. These can vary in shape, size, color, and often times can be paired with a downlight to help light up your flag to be dark sky compliant. Another option for a finial is the StarGazer, which is our most innovative flagpole lighting product on the market!
The Halyard
Halyard of a flagpole is the cable or rope used to raise and lower the flag on the flagpole. Halyards can be either external and tied to a cleat, or be kept internal.
Snap Hooks
Snap Hooks are the hardware that physically attaches the flag to the halyard line.
