Happy Birthday, National Guard!
Posted by Hayley Adams on Dec 4th 2025
You might frequently hear stories about Special Operations forces or Navy ships, or perhaps you've watched the Air Force Thunderbirds practice or perform. Sometimes in the midst of all that news, it feels like the National Guard doesn't always get the recognition they deserve.
However, their history is long and distinguished, and they deserve to be in the spotlight too! The National Guard has been a pillar of support for the other branches of the armed forces from the very beginning and remains an active protector of our country today.
December 13, 1636, marks the beginning of the organized militia, and in honor of their birthday, here are some lesser-known facts about the National Guard.
1. The National Guard is actually older than the Army. These militias were used as early as 1636 to protect the British colonies. The U.S. Army wasn't formed until the beginning of the Revolutionary War in the late 1700s.
2. National Guard forces coined the term "Minutemen" during the American Revolution due to their rapid response ability.
3. The term "national guard" was popularized by Marquis de Lafayette to describe each state's militia, but it didn't become an official term until 1916.
4. The National Guard maintains elite Special Forces units. The 19th and 20th Special Forces Groups are part of the Army National Guard's Special Operations capabilities. Although these National Guard members serve part-time, they must complete all the same rigorous training as their active-duty counterparts to earn the distinction of wearing the green beret.
5. The National Guard is unique among U.S. armed forces in that it can perform both state and federal functions. The Guard is generally called up to respond to state-level emergencies, such as natural disasters. But unlike most other military forces, it can also serve a domestic law enforcement role under certain circumstances.
Recent Service and Recognition
Throughout 2024, National Guard members responded to major disasters including Hurricane Helene, which devastated western North Carolina with severe flooding, and numerous other emergencies across the country. The National Guard has also experienced significant recruiting success, with nearly 50,000 new members enlisted in fiscal year 2025, bringing total strength to over 433,000 members.
Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
As we celebrate the National Guard's birthday and rich history, we must also pause to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today (Decemeber 4th, 2025), flags fly at half-staff in honor of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom of the West Virginia Army National Guard. Her service and sacrifice remind us of the very real commitment these citizen-soldiers make to protect and serve our communities and nation.
Although they aren't always in the headlines, the National Guard has played a pivotal role in our country's history and continues to do so today. Thank you to all those who serve and have served in any branch of the military!
