Honoring our Heros on National POW/MIA Recognition Day
Posted by Hayley Adams on Sep 18th 2025
This Friday, September 19th, Americans across the nation will observe National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a solemn reminder of our unwavering commitment to those who sacrificed everything for our freedom. This day unites us in honoring prisoners of war and those still missing in action, while reaffirming our promise that they are never forgotten.
A Legacy Born from Lost
Established by Congress in 1979, National POW/MIA Recognition Day emerged from the painful aftermath of the Vietnam War, when countless families faced the agonizing uncertainty of missing loved ones. Over the decades, this observance has grown to encompass all American POWs and MIAs throughout our nation's military history—from World War II to present-day conflicts.
The POW/MIA Flag
The POW/MIA Flag features a silhouetted bowed head and the powerful words "You Are Not Forgotten" and serves as our nation's sacred pledge. Created in 1972 by World War II veteran Newt Heisley, this black and white banner flies proudly at military installations, national cemeteries, VA facilities, and major memorials, including the White House.
By law, the flag must be displayed at these locations as a constant reminder of our enduring commitment to account for every service member.
Coming Together in Remembrance
National POW/MIA Recognition Day transcends political divisions, bringing Americans together around shared values of loyalty, duty, and the sacred promise to leave no one behind. Communities nationwide will gather for ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and educational programs that honor these heroes while supporting families still seeking answers.
These observances remind us that behind every POW/MIA statistic is a real person—someone's son, daughter, parent, or spouse—who deserves to be remembered and brought home.
How You Can Show Support
