National POW/MIA Recognition Day
Posted by Hayley Adams on Sep 19th 2024
National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September each year. This Day unites Americans in honoring those who have suffered as prisoners of war (POWs) and those who remain missing in action (MIA). It's powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, and the enduring commitment to bring them home.
The History Behind the Day
Established in 1979 by an act of Congress, National POW/MIA Recognition Day has since become a yearly observance. It began after the Vietnam War, a conflict that left many American families grappling with uncertainty about the fate of their missing loved ones. As the years went on, this day has evolved to include all American POWs and MIAs from conflicts throughout our nation's history.
The POW/MIA Flag
The POW/MIA Flag is the iconic black and white flag features the silhouette of a bowed head with the words "You Are Not Forgotten" beneath. It is to be flown at major military installations, national cemeteries, post offices, VA medical facilities, the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the official offices of the secretaries of state, defense and veterans affairs, the director of the selective service system and the White House.
It was designed in 1972 by Newt Heisley, a World War II veteran, it has become a powerful symbol of our nation's commitment to accounting for every service member.
Unity in Remembrance
National POW/MIA Recognition Day brings Americans together in a shared commitment to honor those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. It reminds us of the values that unite us as a nation: loyalty, duty, and the promise to leave no one behind.
Across the country, communities gather for ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and educational events. These activities not only pay tribute to POWs and MIAs but also support their families, who continue to seek closure and answers.
