The Jerusalem Cross is rich in symbolism and meaning and is also known as the Crusader's Cross.

The Jerusalem cross represents Christ's command to spread the Gospel around the world, a mission that originated in Jerusalem. What many might not be aware of is that the Jerusalem Cross was actually part of the coat of arms of the short-lived Jerusalem Kingdom (1099-1203 AD). It is a busy collection of five crosses, one large cross in the middle and 4 smaller crosses placed in each quadrant.

The Origin of the Jerusalem Cross

The Jerusalem Cross dates back to the 11th and 12th century when the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, establishing Christianity in the area which was then officially named the Jerusalem Kingdom. (At that time, Muslim forces controlled the area).

The Jerusalem Cross became a distinct symbol of the new Crusader state and a powerful hope for many. The people believed that the cross symbolized Jesus Christ and the city of Jerusalem which is the root of Christianity. Today, the Jerusalem cross remains the emblem of the Order, and is still the symbol of all those who work to preserve Christianity in Jerusalem.

Interpretations of the Jerusalem Cross

Over there centuries there have been several theories as to what the formation of crosses stand for, but here are some of the most common interpretations.

One of the interpretations is that it’s a combination of the Old Testament teachings (the four Tau Crosses) and the New Testament teachings (the four Greek Crosses).

Alternatively, there is a theory that the four smaller crosses represents the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, with Christ in the center representing Christianity (the central cross). Additionally, the smaller crosses representing the missionaries ready to share Christ with the four corners of the world.

The last common interpretation being, the five crosses represent the five wounds of Jesus on the cross (small crosses for the hands and feet, and the large central cross for the spear wound on His side.
