The Traditions of Independence Day

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

The beautiful thing about Independence day in the United States is that whether you live on the East Coast or West Coast, or anywhere in between, the 4th is our opportunity to be unified as a country and the American Flag is, in our opinion, the best way to share our pride and signify unity.

There are several common traditions that are synonymous with Independence Day, some of which include the following:

Displaying the American Flag

We can’t talk about Independence Day traditions without mentioning the American flag. With the American flag being the ultimate symbol of our country, tends to be synonymous with freedom, patriotism, and unity. You’ll find it displayed in front of businesses, homes, in city streets and elsewhere across the country .

If you don’t own an American flag yet, we have you covered! The RePatriot Flag is lightweight, weather proof, easy to clean, and made 100% from recycled materials making it perfect to fly on the 4th, as well as the other 365 days of the year!

Fireworks

You can expect to see and hear plenty of fireworks on this particular day. Many cities host firework shows where locals gather to watch the dazzling array of colors light up the night sky.

Why are fireworks used on Independence Day exactly? This tradition has origins that date back to the very first Independence Day, but it was done a little differently back then. On July 4, 1777, Americans blasted a cannon 13 times to symbolize the original 13 colonies. Lucky for us, as the years went one, fireworks have replaced the cannons. Seems to be a little safer for the kiddos.

Salute to the Union

Another common Independence Day tradition, but not well known by many, is The Salute to the Union. Unless you’ve served in the U.S. military, or maybe if you live near a U.S. military base, you may not be too familiar with this one.

The Salute to the Union is a gun salute that’s performed every 4th of July. When the clock strikes 12:00pm, military bases throughout the United States and abroad will perform a gun salute, known as the Salute to the Union. It consists of 50 shots total and each shot symbolizes a state.
