Understanding Veteran Status This Veterans Day

Posted by Hayley Adams on Oct 2nd 2025

As Veterans Day approaches on November 11th, Eagle Mountain Flag and Flagpole takes pride in honoring the brave men and women who have served our nation. But who exactly qualifies as a veteran? Understanding this important distinction helps us properly recognize and thank those who've dedicated themselves to protecting our freedoms.

Who Is Considered a Veteran?

According to federal law, a veteran is someone who served in the active military, naval, or air service and was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. This includes members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

The criteria can vary slightly depending on the context. Generally, service members must have completed at least 24 months of active duty to receive full veteran status and benefits. However, there's an important exception: those who become disabled due to their service have no minimum service requirement.

Reserve and National Guard Members

Many people wonder about Reserve and National Guard service. Members who serve 20 years or more in the Guard or Reserves now receive official veteran status. Additionally, those who served at least 180 days in a federal status outside of training are also recognized as veterans.

Remembering POW/MIA Veterans: You Are Not Forgotten

Veterans Day is also an important time to remember a special group of veterans—our Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. These service members hold full veteran status, having served on active duty in defense of our nation. POWs who endured captivity and later returned home are veterans who made extraordinary sacrifices. Those who went missing while serving on active duty were veterans at the time of their disappearance, and their service and sacrifice deserve equal recognition.

The POW/MIA flag, with its powerful message "You Are Not Forgotten," serves as a solemn reminder of these veterans who never returned home or who suffered under enemy captivity.

Honoring Each Branch with Military Flags

At Eagle Mountain Flag and Flagpole, we believe one of the most meaningful ways to honor our veterans is by displaying flags that represent their service. Beyond the American flag, military branch flags offer a powerful way to recognize the specific service of veterans in your life or community.

Each branch of the military—ArmyMarine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard —has its own distinctive flag featuring unique colors, symbols, and emblems that represent their proud heritage and mission. Flying a military branch flag alongside the American flag shows specific recognition for those who served in that particular branch.

These flags are perfect for:

  • Homes of veterans who want to display their branch pride
  • Businesses honoring employees or customers who served
  • Community spaces during Veterans Day ceremonies
  • Memorial tributes for fallen service members
