The Bunker Hill Flag is a flag that was said to have been flown during the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. The flag features a dark blue field with an English St. George’s Cross in the canton with a pine tree in the upper left quartile. St. George’s Cross has been used as the English flag since the time of King Henry VIII. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17th, 1775. The colonists’ militia groups had been camping around Boston in an effort to confine the British to the city. This was a result of British hostilities in Lexington and Concord on April 19th. The colonists learned the British were going to try and take possession of the hills surrounding Boston, so they stealthily sent 1,200 men to occupy Breed’s Hill, which was closer to Boston than Bunker Hill.
The morning of the 17th, British General Thomas Gage discovered the colonists had taken the hill during the night and immediately assembled his troops to confront them. 1,500 Red Coats rowed a short distance across the Boston Harbor to land on the peninsula. The British made 2 unsuccessful assaults on Breed’s Hill. Eventually reinforcements came to the relief for both the Continentals and British, doubling the armies of both sides. The third assault was successful due to the colonists running out of ammunition. Despite the British eventually taking the hill, it was a blow to both the British army and their pride.
