History of the Southern France 1944 Battle Streamer:
In August 1944, following the success of the Normandy landings, U.S. and Allied forces launched Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France. The campaign aimed to liberate France from German occupation, creating a second front in the war to relieve pressure on the Allies' push in the north. Beginning on August 15, 1944, the U.S. Army, alongside French and other Allied forces, fought fierce battles to secure key ports and cities, including Toulon and Marseille, effectively weakening the German defense in Western Europe. By the end of September 1944, southern France was liberated, contributing significantly to the defeat of Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe.
