History of the SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES 1945 Battle Streamer
In strategic maneuvers across Leyte and Luzon Islands, the United States tactically bypassed formidable Japanese garrisons in The Netherlands East Indies, Borneo, and the southern Philippines. The Allies, led by the U.S. Sixth Army and the Fifth Air Force, focused on vanquishing the remaining enemy forces in the Philippines.
Under the command of Maj. Gen. Paul B. Wurtsmith, the Eighth Army and the Thirteenth Air Force launched a successful campaign to reclaim the southern Philippines. Notably, the 41st Infantry Division landed unopposed on Palawan, while forces descended on Zamboanga Peninsula, facing determined Japanese resistance. The Thirteenth Air Force played a pivotal role, providing close air support and moving fighter units to bolster subsequent landings.
American forces achieved significant victories, capturing islands like Tawitawi, Jolo, Panay, Negros, Cebu, and Bohol. Despite Japanese defenders withdrawing to the interior, U.S. forces secured their objectives with precision. The true test came in mid-April 1945 when the only sizable Japanese force remaining in the southern Philippines centered around Davao Gulf. Aerial bombardments and ground forces, aided by the 403d Troop Carrier Group's resupply efforts, led to the liberation of Davao on May 3.
This battle streamer commemorates the relentless pursuit of victory on Mindanao, where Marine fighter aircraft and AAF fighters collaborated for decisive napalm strikes. Gen. Douglas MacArthur's proclamation on July 4, 1945, marked the triumphant end of the Philippines campaigns. Own a piece of history with our US Air Force Battle Streamer, a testament to the courage and resilience displayed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II.
