History of the AIR OFFENSIVE, EUROPE 1942-1944 Battle Streamer
In the early stages, the Eighth's 15th Bombardment Squadron, facing aircraft shortages, borrowed American-built medium bombers from the RAF for a daring low-level raid on July 4 against Dutch airfields. The Eighth Air Force officially began strategic bombardment on August 17, 1942, targeting marshaling yards in Rouen, France, initiating a year of intense operations.
Led by Maj. Gen. Ira C. Eaker, the Eighth played a key role in the Casablanca Conference's decision for daylight precision bombing against Germany. In 1943, the Eighth undertook its first mission within Germany, launching a relentless bombing campaign against enemy facilities despite heavy losses. Adapting to challenges, the Eighth modified fighters for long-range escort missions, reducing bomber losses and impacting German aircraft.
Collaborating with other air forces, the Eighth contributed significantly to the Air Offensive, Europe, Campaign, securing air superiority. Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Allied Air Forces. Preparing for Operation Overlord, the Allies intensified attacks on the German aircraft industry and transportation. A strategic bombing campaign from February 20 to 25, 1944, resulted in over 6,000 sorties, destroying 500 enemy fighter aircraft and targeting transportation networks in Belgium, The Netherlands, and France, isolating Normandy by D-Day.
