History of the BUENA VISTA 1847 Battle Streamer
In February 1847, during the Mexican-American War, General Santa Anna led an army of approximately 15,000 men to attack the forces near Saltillo, Mexico. General Zachary Taylor, recognizing the vulnerability of his position, hastily redeployed his troops to Buena Vista. Employing French tactics, Santa Anna attempted to overwhelm the American forces with dense columns of men. However, the American troops, despite being outnumbered, successfully repelled the attacks over two days of intense fighting. Santa Anna eventually retreated to San Luis Potosi, having suffered significant casualties, while the exhausted American forces, unable to pursue, also incurred losses. This battle at Buena Vista stands as a testament to the resilience and courage of the American soldiers during this pivotal moment in history.
