History of the SARATOGA 1777 Battle Streamer
In the summer and fall of 1777, the British devised a strategy to divide New England from the rest of the American states and capture Philadelphia, the Revolutionary government's seat. Major General John Burgoyne led a force down Lake Champlain, while Colonel Barry St. Leger advanced from Fort Oswego into the Mohawk Valley, aiming to join Burgoyne at Albany. Despite initial successes, including the evacuation of Ticonderoga, and a siege at Fort Stanwix, the British faced resistance and setbacks, culminating in the Battles of Freeman's Farm and Bemis Heights. Hindered by American forces and unable to receive sufficient reinforcements, Burgoyne surrendered his army near Saratoga in October, marking a turning point in the Revolutionary War.
