History of the TRENTON 1776 Battle Streamer
Following the British success on Long Island, a series of landings on Manhattan Island forced Washington's retreat northward to avoid entrapment. Losses of Forts Washington and Lee on the Hudson above Manhattan in mid-November 1776 prompted Washington's retreat across New Jersey with General Howe in close pursuit, eventually escaping over the Delaware into Pennsylvania with approximately 3,000 men. Howe settled into winter quarters in New York City, leaving garrisons in Newport, R. I., and various New Jersey towns. In December 1776, Washington led a surprise attack on the 1,400-man Hessian force in Trenton, aiming to bolster American morale. Crossing the ice-choked Delaware on Christmas night with about 2,400 men, they achieved complete surprise, resulting in the surrender of the Hessians after an hour and a half of fighting. American losses were minimal, marking a pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War.
