History of the BLADENSBURG 1814 Battle Streamer
After Napoleon's surrender, the British dispatched Maj. Gen. Robert Ross from France in June 1814 with 4,000 veterans to raid key points on the American coast. Ross landed in Maryland at the mouth of the Patuxent River in August and marched towards Washington, encountering little resistance. Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. William Winder had assembled a force of about 5,000 men near Bladensburg, including militia and regulars. Despite having a numerical advantage, the Americans were easily defeated by Ross' force, resulting in the burning of the Capitol and other public buildings as retaliation.
