History of the CHIPPEWA 1814 Battle Streamer
In a strategic move in March 1814, American forces under Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson advanced from Plattsburg, only to be halted near the border. However, in July of the same year, General Brown led 3,500 men to capture Fort Erie across the Niagara River, coordinated with Commodore Isaac Chauncey's fleet to gain control of Lake Ontario from the British. During subsequent maneuvers near the Chippewa River, Brig. Gen. Winfield Scott's brigade, part of Brown's command, encountered a sizable British force on a seemingly routine day in early July. Despite the unexpected confrontation, Scott's troops executed a brilliant charge, breaking the enemy line and forcing a hasty retreat. This victory marked a significant turning point in the Niagara region, with British losses outnumbering American casualties.
