The United States Space Force (USSF) is the space warfare service branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and one of the eight U.S. uniformed services. As the sixth and youngest branch, it was the first military branch established since the independent U.S. Air Force in 1947. The Space Force's roots trace back to the Air Force Space Command, formed on September 1, 1982, with the responsibility for space warfare operations. The National Defense Authorization Act for 2020 redesignated Air Force Space Command as the U.S. Space Force, officially establishing it as an independent branch on December 20, 2019.
